Elizabeth Nicholls is a Melbourne based figurative artist working mostly in watercolour on paper. Elizabeth’s creative side showed at a young age with drawing rainbows, talking to bugs in the grass for hours and playing in her mother’s earthenware pottery shed making small animals out of clay and selling them. Elizabeth completed her formal art studies at the Melbourne School of Art in 2003 with her first solo exhibition in 2008 with Tacit Art Gallery Melbourne, which help fund her first trip around Italy, Paris and London.
Figurative drawing informs Elizabeth’s daily arts practice; technically and emotionally. Through drawing she finds space to contemplate, play and create work with layers of meaning. A sprawling sense of joy and the theatrical can often be found in Elizabeth’s work through spontaneous and decisive mark-making, movement, carving and abstracting the space within and around the paper to respond and record a moment in time to be share with others.
